8. What is Genre and what is a Teen Drama film?

What is Genre?


After receiving insight from the all powerful source of information, Google, we have concluded that a suitable definition of the word 'genre' is that it is a style or category of art, music or literature. Some examples of genres of Music would include, Pop, Soul, Jazz, Blues and Rock. Some examples of genres of literature is Poem, Novel, Non-fiction, Fiction, Drama, Romance and Mystery. These examples are obviously useless, as we are speaking about the genres in film. Some examples of genre in film would include, Drama, Rom-com, Comedy, Superhero and Action. Genre is often talked about in two ways: Either Semantic (the way the film looks) or Syntactic (the story the film tells).

What is a Teen Drama?


In our case, Teen Drama is a genre of film. Teen Drama could be split into two further categories (sub-genres) called High School Drama and Teen Drama. A teen Drama focuses around the plight of teenagers. Commonly, the story centers aroung a tennager's (or group of teenagers') idea of their 'coming of age'.

The conventions included in Teen Drama films would include:
-Authority in school or home (often with their disputes with the concept of authority)
-Parents and/or teachers
-Groups of friends
-Adolescent Characters

What institutions are involved in making a Teen Drama film?
